"the beautiful people club"
i'm keeping in this class because in my visit last night i learned that this is a gathering of the beautiful people of the art department. Not physically... thats not what i mean really... but all of the people who's studio spaces i've admired so much over the past year and a half seem to have chosen this class this semester and the opportunity to glean what i can from them is too good to pass up.
kent butler is an amazing man i suspect. i haven't seen much of his art but even in the way he opened class with his acknowledgement of scripture and the prophets was really beautiful. The art professors here feel their importance and it weighs down on their shoulders. They make sure and pass on their craft with the respect and awe of masters. I think God honors it.
It makes me want to do WELL.
To show them I'm a part of this clan of gardeners.
So far in new genre the project is difficult.
but not in the way of construction.
the class is going to replenish my insides by causing me to spend a lot of time in reflection.
I need black pants.
ALSO: i need a single object that describes me.
FIGURE DRAWING AND PAINTING
"boot camp"
lets just call it what it is... Guy Kinnear is a genius.. one of those strange weirdos who you are blessed to be taught by... i need to take advantage of him because ... lets face it... I stink at painting and i've no idea what i'm doing.
Monday we are going to go through an entire newsprint pad.
I COULDN'T BE MORE THRILLED.
we'll start first thing with a real model and use him all the way up.
i'm going to bring charcoal. g-2. pencils. conte. eraser. newsprint. sketchbook.
and its going to rock.
SCULPTURE
i won't lie... there are some obnoxious folks in this class.
almost everyone is a year older than me... but i'm sorta thrilled about that.
Carlson is interesting.
I stared at his thumbs for probably about 12% of class time and all i could think was GIMLI son of GLOIN.
perfect for sculpture prolly.
Our first project was fairly ambiguous.
I need to look at the given links because i was kinda spacing out during the directions...
all in all i feel like all my bases are covered for this semester.
i'm going to be drawing like a maniac.
i'm going to be able to work in 3d.
i'm going to be using my body in new genre.
if you want to something damagingly beautiful watch Yoko Ono's Cut Piece.

I love this, especially about Carlson. Mitch and I were cracking up. Hope you don't mind me following your blog.
