Top 5 Love Songs by The Mountain Goats

5. Going to Queens
L0ve for him...it's his lady coming out of a shower, dripping wet, while kids outside on the street are jumping rope and singing songs. Something singularly beautiful happens in that moment and the lover becomes "all [he] ever wanted", "all [he'd] ever need".

4. Broom People
A beautiful story that causes me to dismiss my reason for dismissing as cliche the story of boys who get beat-up on the schoolyard and the girls who love them.
"good reasons to freeze to death."

3. Going to Georgia
This song is raw and desperate. its a i'm horrible and destructive but youre softly saving me.
"Two big hands and a heart pumping blood and a 1967 Colt .45 with a busted safety catch" is one of the most terrifying yet beautiful images I can think of.

2.International Small Arms Traffic Blues
The entire album of Tallahassee should be on this list. It should be required reading for high school students. This sort of love is the destructive love that you can't describe as pretty or lovely. Its a watch-the-hell-out, I-will-take-you-down-with-me love that has no respect or regard for anything but its own consummatory force. The cutesy-at-first-glance similes are the hook of this song ("our love is like the border between Greece and Albania", obviously), but is there anything that sums this album up better than the bitter-and-yet-disarming admission "the way I feel about you, baby, can't explain it / you've got the best of my love"?

1. There Will Be No Divorce
this song is incredibly beautiful.
and its the reason why i don't know how to explain them.... John Darnielle is cramming poetry into EVERY line and his songs are so short but full.
its going to be perfectly alright.

if you don't like them...
you don't like poetry and thats a damn shame.
